The day was jointly organised between South Tyneside Family Learning Service and CEDC (Community Education Development Centre) to celebrate the successful launch of Share in the Borough, which has been piloted in 12 schools this year.

As well as demonstrating the exciting and innovative practice in Family Learning in South Tyneside and exploring the impact of Family Learning nationally, there was a performance of dance and 'rap poetry' on stage by both parents and children and assorted workshops.

Speakers included James Nottingham, Director of N-RAIS (Northumberland's Raising Aspirations in Society), Phil Street, CEO of CEDC and Tony Gill, Head Teacher of Hadrian Primary School.

Regional Conference 2003 - Raps and Poems

One of the highlights of the conference was the performance from one of South Tyneside's Family Learning groups - here are two of the raps and poems included in their performance.

Metal Monster on the move,
Metal Monster in the groove,
I crossed the road but didn't look,
That was a silly mistake I took.
Then he gave me a great big punch,
And I ended as his lunch.

When you cross the road
Do not act like a toad
you'll get squished if you don't know
The 'Green Cross Code'.

Even when you're having fun,
Please remember not to run.
You could end up being mash,
If a car decides to crash.
When crossing roads please don't be mean
Make sure that you're always seen.

Cross the road, But
Don't forget the code
It's full of mean metal machines,
So use your head when the light's on red.
Please be cool, not a fool.
