Reports - Family Learning Conference 2005 "Learning From The Best"

5th Annual Family Learning Conference - Ushaw College 6 July

This years' family learning conference was a resounding success. Keith Mitchells' opening comments demonstrated Durham Local Education Authorities' support for the vital role family learning plays in raising achievement and in meeting the requirements of the Every Child Matters agenda. Jeanne Haggarts' keynote presentation was informative and thought provoking, placing family learning in County Durham firmly in the developing national context around Change for Children.

People attending commented on the friendly, open and positive atmosphere as well as the willingness of delegates to share good practice plus the 'pitfalls along the way'. Delegates reported that they came to the conference expecting to find out more about family learning; to network; get ideas for new programmes; to gain a vision for the future; to hear about best practice; gather new ideas which could be implemented in schools and learn about new and creative ideas to add to practice.

Workshops were seen as giving excellent ideas, very informative and providing good practical activities. Workshop Three in the afternoon gave the opportunity for those involved in family learning to come together at a local level. One participant commented that the workshop gave 'empowerment to local planning groups to decide on strategy for themselves'.

Overall people attending felt that the day met or surpassed their expectations.
97% of delegates felt that the conference was good or very good.
93% Delegates felt that this and our previous four conferences had been useful, or invaluable.
Over 40% of those replying responded that they would be happy to pay between £50 - £100 to attend future conferences should we need to introduce a charge.

A big thank you goes to the staff at Ushaw College for helping to make the day so enjoyable. 100% of delegates felt that the venue was good or very good, 97% felt that the catering was good or very good.
