Family Learning Through Football

Family Learning in County Durham has worked in partnership with SAFC Foundation to develop 'Family Learning through Football'. The first unit to be developed is Family Learning through Football and Coaching. Further units will be based around the Foundations five themes of Skills for Life, Health, Environment and Citizenship.
More recently the Foundation has introduced a new course, 'Family Learning through Football and Football Fitness'

Introduction
  • Are you interested in your child's development?
  • Would you like to understand your child more?
  • Would you like to help each other learn while having some fun?
  • Have you a couple of hours to spare once a week?

If the answer is yes, then Family Learning through Football is for you and your child. Family Learning through Football lasts for 8 weeks and runs for 2 hours per week, with a presentation held at the Stadium of Light for those who complete all sessions. Each weekly “Get Together” consists of:
  • Fun and games with your child relating to football
  • Child related topics
  • Open discussion time

These “Get Togethers” are designed to be relaxed and enjoyable for you and your child and will hopefully give an insight on how you can help your child’s development throughout school.

Course Aims

A.Children
  1. Develop physical skills in terms of the National Curriculum for PE
  2. Develop fine and gross motor skills
  3. Improve powers of concentration
  4. Gain self confidence
  5. Develop cooperative skills in small groups
  6. Develop relationships with parents

  1. Production of an organised file with a view to further or entry into learning
  2. Develop insights into working with their own child
  3. Increase their knowledge and awareness of issues related to health and a healthy lifestyle
  4. Increase their understanding of the national curriculum
  5. Develop relationships with the school
  6. Improve confidence in self and working with others.
Accreditation Information
What is it?
It is a way of recognising achievement and can be awarded with a credit and a certificate. The course has two levels of accreditation: Level 1 and Level 2 from the Open College Network.
  • Level 1 is broadly comparable to NVQ level 1, GNVQ Foundation or GCSE (grades D-G).
  • Level 2 is broadly comparable to an NVQ level 2, GNVQ Intermediate or GSCE (grade A –C).

Accreditation is an added bonus and need only be completed if you want to. Naturally you will be supported by staff on completing your booklet and having enough evidence.

What is the Open College Network?
The Open College Network is a partnership of organisations including colleges, voluntary and community organisations, universities, local authorities and employers, which offer education and training for adults.

The Open College presents a way for you to gain recognition for your achievements through assessing your evidence (collected through a workbook and folder) to see if it meets the requirements of the level you are aiming for.

Portfolio building
To gain accreditation you need to collect as much evidence as you can to demonstrate you understand the course. Evidence may be through:
  • Completing the work booklet
  • Photographs
  • Diaries
  • Statements from any of the staff

Family Learning through Football and Football Fitness

Fun and informality are the key ingredients of the popular Family Learning through Football and Football Fitness courses run by SAFC Foundation’s Family Learning programme in partnership with Durham County Council. Recently the scheme has run in eight schools in Teesdale, Bishop Auckland, Easington and Central Durham working with 81 families.  All courses have ended with presentations of certificates and a tour of the Stadium of Light.

The course was launched with great success at Cotsford Juniors and Our Lady of the Rosary working with 12 and 15 families respectively.  It focuses on healthy living, the benefits of physical activity, diet and how our bodies work.

Claire Balmforth from Our Lady of the Rosary said, “I came on the course because of my son. By learning new skills I really built up my confidence  over the ten weeks. I thought it was a good idea to get involved with him and it was a good opportunity to meet other parents. I would recommend this course to anyone.”
